Overview
The role of the SLC provides an exciting opportunity to live and work at an English countryside estate castle. SLCs are critical to the social and professional community within Bader College. SLCs are responsible for dealing with a wide variety of issues facing students, while promoting a sense of belonging and facilitating a positive and respectful community among students. In the role, SLCs will provide advice and support to students, develop activities that promote intellectual development and personal growth, assist in the conduct process, and facilitate intentional living and learning experiences that enhance student growth and well-being. The Student Services team delivers a significant amount of social and educational programming on campus that reinforces the university’s academic mission and contributes to the students’ overall learning experience. SLCs will be pro-active, and work as part of a team in which effective communication and reliability is key. In addition to regular programming duties, SLCs will each get the opportunity to take on one specific portfolio. Each portfolio engages current students and SLCs will be responsible for mentoring and leading them toward a common goal.This position requires incumbents to live in the student residence and participate in a 24 hour on-call rotation.Bader College is committed to employment equity, inclusion and diversity and supports fair treatment and opportunity for all. Position Details
The role of SLC is a challenging position. SLCs live in the student residence and take responsibility for dealing with a wide variety of issues including offering advice and support to students, assisting in the conduct process, facilitating intentional living and learning experiences that enhance student growth and well-being, promoting intellectual development, and guiding student development as individuals and community members.The nature of the work requires SLCs to work a shift pattern as determined by the Director of Student Experience & Residence Life and the needs of the students. Duties will vary somewhat, but SLCs will be required to be on call approximately 10-14 days per month in either a primary or back-up on-call role. Being on-call at Bader College requires staff to carry a work phone 24/7 so they can be reached in concerning and emergency situations. SLCs are part of a relatively small team, the majority of whom live in the residence building. SLCs will be the first point of contact for the students and will be called upon to exercise sound judgement in crisis situations.SLCs are allotted 33 days paid holiday per annum including bank holidays. They will be required to be available at key times of the year, such as Fall, Winter and Summer Orientation, training and the opening and closing dates, as well as being available for Mid-Term Trips and on occasional weekends. Vacation times must be approved by the Director of Student Experience & Residence Life in advance with an expectation that breaks of greater than 6 consecutive days, including weekends, are to be scheduled in the break periods between terms.
Qualifications / Required Skills
Person Specification
We are looking for individuals who are self-starters and can take initiative and work in a fast-paced and busy environment. The ideal candidate will have experience living and working in a university residence setting and/or experience working or volunteering in student affairs or student life roles. Applicants are expected to be educated to an undergraduate degree standard or equivalent and have suitable experience delivering programming in a university environment. Experience in, or familiarity with, the Canadian post-secondary sector would be an asset. The successful candidates must be eligible to work in the UK (see job description for visa details). Please note applicants will be required to satisfactorily complete a Criminal Record check from their country of origin and/or an enhanced UK Disclosure and Barring Service Check.
