Job Description / Duties
The Residence Manager is a live-in professional, responsible for all administrative and managerial functions within the respective building(s) in a manner which is consistent with divisional strategic directions and goals. The incumbent will play a critical role in the provision of high quality housing - a critical element in the recruitment and retention of students to Western.
The Residence Manager leads in promoting an atmosphere which supports academic achievement and fosters responsible decision-making. The incumbent will contribute to the overall "learning outside the classroom" through the support of various programming initiatives. Learning opportunities are fostered through the residence behaviour management (judicial) process which the Residence Manager oversees in their building within a restorative justice framework. The Residence Manager is instrumental in developing initiatives to meet the continually changing needs of students.
Qualifications / Required Skills
- Undergraduate degree including studies in Behavioural Sciences, Social Sciences and/or Education
- Master’s degree focussed in Behavioural Sciences, Social Sciences and/or Education preferred
- 3 years' progressive experience in residence life with demonstrated leadership experience in a residence setting, combined with employment experience demonstrating organizational, customer service and administrative competence
- One to three year’s previous residence management experience preferred
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:
- Excellent organizational and time management skills and ability to assess priorities, work independently to meet required deadlines with conflicting demands and changing priorities
- Ability to set priorities, delegate effectively and make sound decisions
- Results-oriented; able to handle many tasks and maintain a high level of individual and team performance
- Working knowledge and/or experience building teams within a large community of students, student-staff, and professional staff
- Demonstrated ability to interact effectively with individuals at all levels of the organization and the public
- Strong customer service skills to handle inquiries and resolve issues in a professional and timely manner
- High level of integrity and trust, tact and diplomacy
- A well-defined sense of diplomacy and judgement including solid negotiation, crisis management and conflict resolution skills
- Demonstrated experience creating and maintaining a budget
- Approachable and understanding individual with a high degree of customer focus
- Good listening skills and an ability to establish effective routines for excellent communication with all members of the team to maximize productivity
- Ability to handle conflict constructively – well developed conflict resolution skills with mediation training an asset
- Accepting and respectful of different personalities and lifestyles
- Strong oral and written communication skills with well-developed presentation skills
- Intermediate computer skills in Microsoft Office
- Willingness to carry pager on a rotational basis
- Willingness to work seasonally long hours, including frequent events and weekends
