Position Overview

Residence Experience in Ancillary Services is currently seeking a Full-time Regular Residence Life Coordinator.

The primary purpose of the Residence Life Coordinator (RLC) position is to plan, implement and critically analyze the Residence Education components of Residence Services operations. In particular, the RLC supports student success by fostering healthy and engaging student communities, connecting students with various resources and the broader campus, and holding accountable students who disrupt or undermine those efforts. The RLC is primarily responsible for Residence Education Team (RET) operations in an assigned building or area. The RLC also shares responsibility with peers for RET operations that span multiple buildings or areas. This position reports to the Manager, Residence Life..

Position Description

Summary of Key Responsibilities (job functions include but are not limited to):

Identifying student needs, whether concerning one person or many, and either responding directly or escalating / referring the issue to appropriate staff
Coordinating and participating in the residence on call system so as to ensure urgent incidents receive appropriate response and attention
Upholding the Community Standards, from promoting positive behaviour to addressing alleged violations, with a focus on balancing learning opportunities, personal accountability and community well-being
Contributing to the development and assessment of priorities, plans, policies and procedures, especially by incorporating student and organizational perspectives
Managing student staff, first and foremost by ensuring they are prepared for and concentrating on the purpose and other priorities outlined above
At all times, the RLC upholds and seeks to achieve Residence Services vision, mission and values. The RLC role models an efficient, results-oriented, critical-thinking perspective. The RLC embraces opportunities for self-improvement, responds objectively to criticism and manages ambiguity with patience
The RLC guides students, including staff and volunteers, towards appropriate resources to help them take ownership of their concerns and challenges, as opposed to solving such issues for them. The RLC champions academic and other educationally purposeful initiatives.
The RLC reports to the Supervisor, Residence Education. This is a regular, full-time, 35 hours per week position. Due to the nature of Residence Education operations, some early morning, late evening, overnight, weekend and holiday work is required Workloads are heavier at peak periods, especially mid-March through mid-April and mid-August through mid-September
The RLC must live on campus in an assigned unit. The RLC is provided a taxable benefit for housing

Qualifications / Required Skills

Qualifications / Requirements:

Undergraduate degree required, with a concentration in a related field strongly preferred; a combination of education and experience may be considered
At least two years of experience as a resident advisor / community advisor in higher education residence is required
At least one year of experience in a senior resident advisor / community advisor in higher education housing is preferred
Professional and/or graduate degree in a related field preferred
Experience managing conflict, criticism and contentious issues required
Experience working in a campus residence environment is required
Experience interacting with demanding customers or clients strongly required
Experience supporting and/or facilitating student success strongly required
Experience responding to emergencies or urgent / distressing situations strongly required
Demonstrated experience planning and implementing major initiatives in alignment with broader organizational priorities
Demonstrated experience managing objectives that may only be achieved gradually, after revisiting tasks or re-engaging other stakeholders multiple times
Demonstrated highly effective verbal, written and cross-cultural communication skills
Demonstrated highly effective documentation, organizational and administrative skills
Demonstrated highly effective computer skills and an aptitude for quickly adapting to make the best use of new software
Demonstrated aptitude for effectively supervising young adults
Demonstrated aptitude for motivating and coaching students from diverse backgrounds
Demonstrated aptitude for managing ambiguity and adapting to changeValid driver's license strongly preferred. In order to operate a University vehicle safely, employees must have a valid driver's license for the type of vehicle they are driving, a minimum class 5 driver's license with no current suspensions and fewer than six (6) demerits. Not have a graduated (GDL), learner's, probationary, or motorcycle/moped only license. A current Driver's Abstract must be provided on request
