Job Description / Duties

The Programming Coordinator is a key member of the Residence Life Management Team, in addressing the transitional needs of our incoming first-year students. In consultation with other members of the Residence Life Management team and the Residence Counsellor, this role develops proactive strategies to address high risk situations, such as underage drinking and mental health issues and healthy relationships, through program design and delivery of educational awareness campaigns, as well as dry-alternative social programs for students in residence.

The Programming Coordinator leads in drawing upon Community Development Theory to facilitate the implementation of a Community Development Model, which assists in creating thriving communities, and supports the best student experience for first-years, upper-years, graduate students and families living in the residences and University-owned accommodations.

Maintaining a strong liaison with campus partners, the Coordinator establishes strategic partnerships with colleagues on campus to deliver joint programs and initiatives that address divisional and University priorities, such as building a campus culture of sustainability, or addressing campus civility and peer support through Upstander programs.

The Programming Coordinator coaches the nine Residents’ Councils and the University Students’ Council in handling joint social, wellness and awareness programs on campus. They provide oversight and guidance to the risk management, financial processes and project management aspects of the residents’ councils.

Qualifications / Required Skills

Education:
- Undergraduate Degree; in Health promotion or Education preferred
- Master's Degree in Education, Student Services or Leadership preferred

Experience:
- 2 years’ experience in Residence Life or Student Affairs
- 2 years’ experience in large-scale event planning and coordination
- Experience providing leadership and support to student leaders, including performance assessment
- Past experience working with elected bodies (student government) is preferred

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:
- Excellent oral and written communications skills with emphasis on proposal development and presentation to internal contacts, up to senior management
- Influential interpersonal skills that build strong, collegial relationships with multiple internal and external stakeholders at all levels of the organization
- Demonstrated staff management experience with an ability to develop a strong department team coupled with an ability to work effectively as a member of the Residence Life Management Team
- Knowledge of and ability to manage social media platforms, communication and engagement strategies for student populations is preferred
- Ability to provide leadership and supervision of staff in day-to-day operations
- Astuteness in balancing competing group interests and political platforms
- Results oriented with an ability to handle many tasks and maintain a high level of individual and team performance
- Proven ability to take initiative and champion a project from conception to implementation and evaluation
- Ability to plan and manage events of all sizes - including logistics, budgeting, trouble-shooting
- Provides solutions by using imaginative approaches where critical thinking and innovation are required
- Business acumen with advanced understanding of quality standards relative to operational improvement, strategic planning and business growth
- Judgment, analytical and problem solving skills with a consultative and collaborative approach to addressing issues and opportunities
- Planning and organizational skill with a proven ability to build and manage a financial and strategic plan
- Ability to influence, persuade, and build group consensus
- Ability to work in a fluid and challenging work environment with changing deadlines and priorities
- Strong record of teamwork with the motivation and ability to work independently with little supervision
- Demonstrated proficiency in using Microsoft Office at an intermediate level
- Proven ability and natural inclination to interact with people in a professional, respectful and diplomatic manner
- Willingness to follow a flexible work schedule, including evenings and weekends
