Job Description / Duties
The Division of Student Affairs helps to transforms students’ lives by supporting and inspiring the highest standards of student learning and success, community engagement and staff development. The Division is comprised of over 30 reporting units in six departments: Athletics and Recreation, Campus Services, Indigenous Affairs, Office of the Registrar, Student Recruitment and Global Engagement, and Student Services. The Student Services department includes a diverse range of services including Health, Counselling, Residence, the Centre for Accessible Learning, the Office of Student Life, Academic Advising, and International Student Services.
Residence Services, a unit within the division of Student Affairs, provides accommodation, programming and education to the on-campus student community, in addition to providing a summer conference operation for off-campus customers. Residence Life and Education, a department within Residence Services aims to provide students with a safe and welcoming community where they are supported in their learning and personal development.
Reporting to the Associate Director, Residence Life and Education, and to the Student Conduct Officer, the Neighbourhood Manager is one of five front-line positions having leadership responsibilities both within an assigned residence neighbourhood and in collaboration with the Residence Services leadership team across residence. The NM provides leadership and oversight in the direct management of a residence community comprised of approximately 400-600 students, as well as fulfilling residence wide responsibilities in areas such as emergency and crisis response; student conduct and follow-up; reporting of facilities issues; and hiring and training of student staff (and volunteers). The NM is guided by the mission, values and priorities of Residence Services, focusing on the development of a positive living environment that promotes academic success, leadership development, citizenship and engagement, personal growth, respect, and inclusion among student staff and residence students.
As part of their organization-wide responsibilities, the NM provides front-line after-hours emergency and crisis response on evenings and weekends (during assigned shifts); oversees and implements student conduct and follow-up processes; and assists the Residence Life and Education team in the hiring and training of all student-staff. Emergency response includes, but is not limited to issues involving high level student mental health, escalating student and community conduct and conflict issues; harassment and bullying, risk assessment, medical and/or facilities emergencies, and front desk operations
During the academic year (September to April) the NM participates in a work shift rotation on a 5-week cycle from September to April, consisting of morning, afternoon and night shifts.
During May to August and holiday closures, the shift rotation may be adapted to meet operational needs. During the summer the NM also assists in the day-to-day oversight of evening and weekend front desk and conference guest operations as required, as well as providing emergency response.
Qualifications / Required Skills
A minimum of an undergraduate degree, preferably in a related field (e.g. Conflict Resolution, Social Work, Counselling Psychology, Education) and a minimum of 4 (four) years of professional experience in related work, including:
- Crisis and/or emergency response (preferably in a Higher Education context)
- Hiring, training, and supervising of staff (preferably in a unionized environment)
- Working with young adult populations (aged 18-24) on both an individual and communities basis.
An equivalent combinations of education, training and/or experience may be considered.
This position requires:
- A proven ability to respond to, triage and manage critical incidents.
- Good judgement and responsiveness in situations of conflict or crisis.
- High level of self-awareness and established self-care practices.
- Good critical thinking and practical problem solving skills; demonstrated understanding of risk and liability issues.
- The ability to deal with confidential and/or potentially conflictual issues with tact, diplomacy and compassion.
- Ability to work in a highly collaborative environment both as part of a team and independently.
- Superior leadership and supervisory skills; ability to lead and motivate teams of student-staff.
- Superior communication skills, both written and verbal.
- Strong administrative skills, including incident and report writing, information and records management.
- Openness and the ability to work effectively with a diverse population.
- Flexibility and ability to adapt to a changing and dynamic environment.
- Understanding of and commitment to the development of an educational response to student or community conduct or job performance issues.
- Ability to develop and maintain positive relationships with multiple stakeholders.
- Demonstrated self-awareness in regards to establishing healthy boundaries, stress management and communication skills.
In addition, this position requires:
- The ability to work shift-work rotation, including day, afternoon and night shifts.

The posting is for five vacancies. These positions will work varied hours.
Please note that these positions will receive a 3% salary adjustment until August 31, 2020 at which time the adjustment will be reviewed.
Salary: $57,353.00 - $64,553.00
