Job Description / Duties
The Manager oversees specific areas of Residence Services (residence life team, front desk and guest services operations, and information technology) and provides leadership in the development of a residential environment which fulfills the goals and vision of Residence Services.
The Manager, Residence Services reports directly to the Director, Residence Services and oversees the residence experience of approximately 1000 on-campus students located in both East and West Residence. They manage Guest Services through direct supervision of the Front Desk Coordinator. They supervise the Information Technology Coordinator and as such, oversee the technical environment of the resident population. In addition, this position oversees the Residence Life Team including three Residence Life Coordinators who in turn, supervise a team of Resident Advisors (casual staff).
Along with the Director, the incumbent is part of the Residence Services leadership team and is a major contributor in designing and delivering the departmental vision and the strategic plan. They are charged with developing and enforcing community standards, managing the student judicial process and Student Conduct Guide and acts as a key decision maker in crisis and emergency cases leading up to and including student eviction. The incumbent will develop and manage the implementation of specialized programs and activities in support of student transition, success and leadership for students living on campus at Mount Royal University. They provide visionary direction within Residence Services to aid in the development and implementation of assessment models for the student experience that support the ongoing strategic evolution of programs and services. This position offers opportunities for creativity and innovation in the development of strategies to promote and deliver services.
The incumbent is responsible for decisions or actions that relate to the day-to-day operations of the Residence Life program. Such decisions impact the degree to which time and resources (human and financial) are effectively used within the area, as well as the credibility of the office as a whole to both those inside and outside of the University community. Decisions made by the incumbent may have a direct impact on the Residence Services department. The incumbent is responsible for providing advice and information to University leaders that may have operational impacts and implications on resources, policies, and future directions. The incumbent has significant latitude for developing creative solutions within their responsibility areas. There will also be the opportunity to affect larger department policy and work procedures through teamwork responsibilities. Problem solving and response to emergency situations will be essential and expected. The incumbent will provide supervision and support of three, on-site, high needs employees (Residence Life Coordinators) who are critical to the safety and security of students and guests living in Residence. This includes acting as the main point of contact for after hours support for staff responding to various situations, including emergencies and crises. There is a direct impact over student satisfaction of on-campus residents who may or may not choose to remain living on campus. Regular interactions and involvement with high needs students including but not exclusive to mental health related concerns, behavior related concerns, etc. is expected. This position’s decision making includes significant impact on the lives of students living in Residence through emergency and crisis response as well as through the student conduct system.
This position supervises two operational coordinator positions (guest services and information technology). In conjunction with these coordinators, the Manager, Residence Services works to ensure residents receive effective and appropriate customer service, full time and casual staff members are trained and supervised appropriately and concerns are addressed promptly and professionally.
Qualifications / Required Skills
Although a Masters Degree would be preferred (specifically in Student Affairs, Leadership or Business), a combination of significant years of progressive experience in on-campus housing and an Undergraduate Degree would certainly be considered due to the unique nature of the role and the critical need for on-campus housing and Residence Life related experience.
3-6 years of experience
Experience in Student Development Education
Post-secondary experience in higher education (Student Affairs preferred) and Residence Life
Conflict management and dealing with difficult and potentially dangerous emergency situations
Budget planning
Extensive customer/student interactions and negotiating skills
Marketing skills.
Experience with understanding and functioning within a culture of higher education
Experience living in residence and handling difficult, stressful and potentially dangerous situations
Experience with developing and leading training programs
Experience providing high level customer service
Experience with the hiring and supervision of staff
Research skills
Strong knowledge of housing management software such as StarRez
Strong knowledge of MS Office software
This is a more senior position within the department and as such progressive Residence Life experience in higher education setting will be essential to respond to the position duties and responsibilities. This includes having lived in Residence as a Resident Advisor as well as experience as an on-site supervisor of a paraprofessional team.
Salary: $80,241-$110,732
