Job Description / Duties

The Department of Student Housing and Residence Life is committed to creating an inclusive and welcoming environment that is conducive to students’ personal and academic success. Our department is responsible for planning and directing all aspects of the University of Toronto Scarborough’s student residences in order to provide accommodations and a community that promotes the development of our students. We work collaboratively with student service professionals across the campus in order to provide a wide range of activities, services and supports to enhance the quality of student experience.

Working under the direction of the Director, Student Housing & Residence Life, the Manager, Residence Life is responsible for managing the daily operations, programming and staff of the residence life team.

Responsibilities of this position include: leading and managing a team of staff to provide high quality programming and a positive student experience for students living in residence at UTSC; setting strategic directions for residence life operations and program planning, continuous program development and improvement, implementation, evaluation and assessment, while making considerations for accessibility, equity and inclusion throughout all aspects of programming; seeking and cultivating partnerships and initiatives focused on transition and success, and ensuring these programs are in keeping with university values and commitments, contemporary practices as well as relevant theory and research; overseeing the administration of the Residence Code of Conduct; initiating and overseeing assessment projects and initiatives related to student success in residence; and developing long range program planning and implementation strategies. The incumbent works with the Director and constituent committees and working groups in developing activities, supports and services, establishing departmental goals and objectives and the department’s long-range plan.

Qualifications / Required Skills

Education:
University degree and/or acceptable equivalent combination of education and experience. A related Master’s degree in Education, Student Affairs, Social Work, Community Services, Leadership, or Management would be an asset.

Experience:
A minimum of five years professional experience working in a university residence setting. Experience in advising students, provision of support plans and safety plans, issues management, crisis and emergency response, conflict mediation, program development and student conduct and judicial affairs in an undergraduate residence community. Experience managing staff, preferably in a unionized environment.

Proven leadership and problem-solving skills. Comfort working as a member of a team composed of individuals with varying responsibilities. Ability to identity risk and sound judgment to appropriately respond. Proven ability to deal with sensitive matters that require professional judgement and confidentiality. Experience improving and enhancing the student experience in residence and in post-secondary settings. Experience creating proposals for training, supports, services and activities. Experience effectively managing a complex set of competing priorities; issues management, emergencies and responding to the personal crises of individual residents is required.

Skills:
Excellent interpersonal skills, communication (verbal and written) skills, tact and diplomacy required. Working knowledge of Microsoft Office (in particular Word and Excel, PowerPoint). Mental health and suicide intervention skills training required.

Knowledge of residence management systems such as StarRez Residence Management System. Familiarity with specific facility systems (e.g., VingCard - Persona, etc.)

Other:
Experience working with facilities, financial and human resource policies and procedures. Comfortable working in an unpredictable and often stressful environment. Ability to interact, communicate and build partnerships with students, parents, university staff and faculty. Must be able to work independently and work as part of a team. Demonstrated creativity is essential. Experience working with diverse student communities is also a significant asset. A high degree of initiative and self-motivation required. Ability to effectively manage, motivate and mobilize a team of administrative staff.

Salary: Hiring Zone: $91,506 - $106,758 -- Broadband Salary Range: $91,506 - $152,510
