Job Description / Duties

Development of programs and policies for Campus Living to create a positive, safe, developmentally appropriate community living environment in which students assume responsibility for their actions.
Facilitate the implementation of the strategic vision and operational plans for Campus Living’s strategic plan.
Implement the Campus Living risk assessment plan that is aligned with University of Winnipeg’s vision, mission, values, and goals.
Provide leadership and direction to the Campus Living staff, residential governance structures and committees.
Conduct research into best practices of other Residence programs. Maintain membership and participation in associations of University residence professionals (eg: OACUHO, CACUSS, etc.)
Implement the standard operating policies and procedures for Campus Living.
Coordinate annual Residence Life staff Training Program and schedule, ensuring high quality and relevant sessions are offered.
Recruits, hires, trains, monitors, and evaluates the performance of staffed Resident Advisors (RA’s).
Evaluates the assessment of skills and development of R.A.’s while providing experiences, opportunities, and training, which challenge and support their development. Hold R.A.’s accountable within their leadership roles.
Serves as an advisor and conducts group meetings withRas.
Develops and facilitates Residence Orientation in consultation with the appropriate University and community partners.
Provide leadership and direction for the implementation of residence policies, community standards, residence events and programs.
Collaborate with the Director, Campus Living in the development, implementation, and overseeing of developmental, educational, and recreational programs for students.
Research and construct the development of programs/initiatives aimed at fostering diversity and inclusiveness for students, staff, and faculty members.
Identifies opportunities to work collaboratively on training initiatives campus-wide. Creates and implements strategies with other departments to increase engaged awareness.
Use departmental protocol and procedures to respond to crisis or emergency situations.
Meet with individual student residents, as necessary, to address issues of distress and/or personal concerns.
Mediate and resolve issues that arise in a living and learning environment.
Initiate appropriate action with respect to disciplinary matters. Ensure the enforcement of community standards through policy interpretation and implementation.
Meet with students in violation of Residence community standards to determine possible sanctions, follow-up with students and staff with written reports. Keep thorough, confidential files.
Evaluate and assess university residence occupancy, retention, and projections/trends.
Facilitate the daily management of all residence operations.
Partner with food services personnel to maintain quality food service operation for students in residences.
Ensure compliance with all relevant policies, procedures, standards, and laws.
Serve as secondary liaison to other student development functional areas, enrollment services, and academic and campus support units.
Coordinate student account tracking systems with Office Assistant and Student Central offices; oversee student payments, issues with collections, reporting revenues, etc.
Work with the Office assistants to coordinate fall move-in of residence students, move-out of students, and summer residence move in and move outs.
Work with the Short Term Accommodations Coordinator to ensure the hostel and conference operation has the appropriate business practices, accounting, and summer staffing required to operate.
Participate on UWCRC team on community based project development teams.
Represent University of Winnipeg on student residence issues with a variety of community organizations.

Qualifications / Required Skills

Qualifications:

Bachelor’s Degree in Psychology, Sociology, or a related discipline, with knowledge and understanding of student development theories. Master’s Degree preferred.
Student Conflict Resolution is a key resource for the incumbent in this area.
Minimum three to five years’ experience in increasingly more responsible positions in a Campus/Living or Residence Life environment. Proven track record of success in leadership in those roles. Experience with program planning, training, implementation and evaluation preferred.
Superior leadership and managerial skills with demonstrated ability to lead diverse groups including student staff.
Effectively sets direction and motivates, coaches, develops and evaluates staff in a positive manner
High level of understanding of the applications of technology to the functions of the Office of Campus Living
Ability to plan strategically, to implement plans and to assess their effectiveness
Ability to apply marketing and sales techniques to attract, convert, and retain students in Campus Living
Excellent verbal and written communication skills; public speaking and group facilitation skills; interpersonal, problem solving, and decision making skills
Proficient in the use of Campus Living Software (e.g., StarRez), database management, word processing, presentation and spread sheet software
Attention to detail is required and the ability to multi-task.
Ability to relate well to students, parents, staff, Faculty, and general public.
Familiarity with University policies and procedures preferred. Understanding of Manitoba Liquor Control Commission policies preferred.
Possession of a vehicle and a valid drivers license is an asset.
