Job Description / Duties

Your Opportunity
The Dean of Students reports to the Principal of Innis College and is a member of a team of senior college administrators charged with ensuring that the cultural, social, recreational, and academic environment contributes to the total educational experience of the students. The Dean of Students is responsible for the administration and operation of all aspects of the College residence. The Dean of Students is responsible for planning, developing and implementing programs to enrich the quality of student life across the College as a whole and promote the College’s focus on diversity, equity, and inclusion. The incumbent serves on University-wide committees engaged in the review, development, and implementation of policy affecting the quality of student life on the campus.

Qualifications / Required Skills

Essential Qualifications

EDUCATION:
Master’s degree, preferably in Education or Higher Education Administration. Formal training in counseling and/or mediation and crisis intervention strongly preferred.

EXPERIENCE:
Eight (8) or more years’ relevant resident and student life leadership experience with a demonstrated record of progressively responsible experience in these key areas:
Residence and student life programming;
Mediation and crisis intervention;
Human resources management;
Post-secondary housing facilities and operations management;
Financial administration, including budget development.
Experience leading staff in a unionized environment.

SKILLS:
Demonstrated leadership skills and commitment to values of student development, and community building.
Commitment and success in understanding and addressing student matters related to equity, diversity and inclusion in a residential setting.
Ability to envision innovative and enterprising student support initiatives and work with Assistant Dean, Community Wellness and Assistant Dean, Student Life to realize that vision.
Demonstrated leadership approach grounded in empathy and respect for all College community members, including students.
Excellent staff management skills with ability to guide and develop staff skills.
Superb research, writing, communication, presentation and interpersonal skills; high degree of political acuity and judgment, consensus building.
Commitment to and proven success working in a post-secondary environment in a manner which facilitates collaboration and consensus building; ability to work effectively with a wide variety of internal and external stakeholders.
Ability to work independently with a high degree of initiative, discretion, and tact; ability to succeed in a challenging and dynamic environment 24/7, 365 days per year setting,
Superior organizational skills in planning, project management, and problem solver orientation.

OTHER:

Demonstrated ability to write briefings, reports and manage financials related to residence operations. Working knowledge of Word, PowerPoint, Excel, Outlook.



HOURS of Work :
Monday to Friday with regular evenings and weekends aligned to operational needs of Residence life and operation;

Position is expected to be on-call outside regular working hours for issues and crisis management and is required to come onto campus to handle emergencies.

The position includes living on-site or in close proximity of the College Residence to attend work on an on-call basis for emergencies.
