Job Description / Duties

The Division of Housing and Ancillary Services is committed to providing a first-class residence experience for over 5,300 Western students while supporting the academic mission of the University and ensuring profitability and cost effectiveness of the Housing operation. We provide thriving residence communities which engage our diverse student population.

Working from the theoretical frameworks and guiding principles of restorative justice and transformational learning, this role supports the behaviour management and discipline practices of Western’s residence communities.

Western’s residence system actively fosters the personal and social development of students who are held accountable for violations of the Residence Contract. The role contributes to the overall “learning outside the classroom” through the support of the residence life program.

The behavioural management system is designed to promote self-discipline and increase capacity to respect the rights of others. Appropriate conflict resource methods and educational opportunities are emphasized, which are fostered through the residence behaviour management process with which the Coordinator of Residence Conduct supports in all buildings.

The Coordinator of Residence Conduct oversees the issuance and compliance of educational sanctions and facilitates educational seminars. This role, in collaboration with the Associate Director, Conduct & Conflict Resolution, facilitates alternative dispute resolution and restorative approaches to address student behavioural concerns.

Qualifications / Required Skills

Education:
- Undergraduate degree including studies in Behavioural Sciences, Social Sciences and/or Education
- Master’s degree focused in Behavioural Sciences, Social Sciences and/or Education preferred
- Certification in Alternative Dispute Resolution training including mediation and restorative justice facilitation preferred

Experience:
- Three years progressive professional conduct with demonstrated leadership experience in a post-secondary setting, combined with employment experience demonstrating risk management skills, as well as organizational, customer service and administrative competence
- Experience with restorative justice practice and other alternative dispute resolution experience preferred

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:
- Excellent organizational and time management skills and ability to assess priorities, work independently to meet required deadlines with conflicting demands and changing priorities
- Able to set priorities, delegate effectively and make sound decisions
- Results-oriented; able to handle many tasks and maintain a high level of individual and team performance
- Efficiently builds positive and collaborative working relationships
- Working knowledge and/or experience building teams within a large community of students, student-staff, and professional staff
- Demonstrated well-developed collaborative skills and the demonstrated ability to interact effectively with individuals at all levels of the organization and the public
- Strong customer service skills to handle inquiries and resolve issues in a professional and timely manner
- High level of integrity and trust, tact and diplomacy
- A well-defined sense of diplomacy and judgement including solid negotiation, crisis management and conflict resolution skills
- Demonstrated experience creating and maintaining a budget
- Approachable and understanding individual with a high degree of customer focus
- Good listening skills and an ability to establish effective routines for excellent communication with all members of the team to maximize productivity
- Ability to handle conflict constructively with well-developed conflict resolution skills; mediation training an asset
- Accepting and respectful of different personalities and lifestyles
- Strong oral and written communication skills with well-developed presentation skills
- Intermediate computer skills in Microsoft Office
- Willingness to be on-call on a rotational basis
- Willingness to work seasonally long hours, including frequent events and weekends
- The use of a particular expression or illustration describing duties shall not be held to exclude other duties not mentioned that are of similar kind or level of difficulty
- Ability to move around campus quickly and readily to work in all buildings
