Job Description / Duties
The Division of Student Affairs helps to transforms students’ lives by supporting and inspiring the highest standards of student learning and success, community engagement and staff development. The Division is comprised of over 30 reporting units in six departments: Athletics and Recreation, Campus Services, Indigenous Affairs, Office of the Registrar, Student Recruitment and Global Engagement, and Student Services.
The Student Services department includes a diverse range of services including Health, Counselling, Residence Services, the Centre for Accessible Learning, the Office of Student Life, Academic Advising, and International Student Services.
Residence Services, a unit within Student Affairs, provides accommodation services, programming and education to approximately 2,300 on-campus students, in addition to providing a summer conference operation for off-campus customers. Through the development of intentional residence communities, informed programming and a responsive educational conduct system, the Residence Life and Education unit provides a safe, secure, and engaging residence experience; creating and supporting conditions for student success.
The Associate Director, Residence Life and Education (AD), is responsible for the strategic development, management and assessment of the Residence Life and Education unit at the University of Victoria. The AD is responsible for meeting the developmental needs of first year undergraduates, senior and graduate students, international students and students living in family housing. Reporting to the Director of Residence Services, the AD utilizes grounded, contemporary pedagogy in residential education to develop and manage a comprehensive program that fosters academic success, leadership development, citizenship and involvement, personal growth and inclusion, with learning outcomes aligned to meet the organizational goals and objectives of Residence Services, Student Affairs and the University.
The AD understands the value and nature of contemporary residential practices that include the development and oversight of living learning communities, residence orientation, the paraprofessional training and development program, and the effective use and allocation of common spaces for residence-wide programming. The AD provides direct training, and delivers and oversees the overall performance management plan for a team of 10 professional residence life staff.
With assistance from the Manager, Education and Training, the AD oversees the hiring, comprehensive training and development, and major human resources follow-up of approximately 95 unionized student staff members within the Residence Life and Education unit. The AD is directly responsible for building and maintaining a number of critical working relationships and partnerships with university departments and faculties and the University community on areas such as crisis response, conduct follow up, community health and welfare, program development, delivery and assessment. As part of the Residence Services management team, the AD works collaboratively with other Residence Services units on the overall operation of Residence Services. The AD oversees the department’s on-call, critical incident and crisis response models, and possesses expertise in crisis management and follow-up.
The AD is responsible for managing a budget of approximately $1.8 million in staff costs and operating expenses, as well as contributing to the development of that budget.
Qualifications / Required Skills
• This position requires a Masters Degree in a related field such as education, public administration, or Student Affairs. An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.
• Minimum 5 to 7 years experience in a public institution or higher education environment (preferably Residence Life/Housing), with demonstrated progressive leadership experience.
• Demonstrated strong administrative and organizations skills,
• Demonstrated collaborative and supportive leadership style; strong supervisory skills; experience supervising in a union environment an asset,
• Proven in-depth experience managing crisis and/or emergency situations, preferably in a residence or higher education context. Knowledge of and experience in managing complex health, conduct or critical incident issues with students and/or communities,
• Creative problem-solver; demonstrated experience initiating, managing and leading change
• Outstanding written and verbal communication skills; ability to share information in a collaborative and effective manner
• Demonstrated ability to work with highly-confidential personal information within privacy legislation and university policies
• Demonstrated financial management experience, including creating and monitoring budgets, and effectively monitoring and controlling expenses
• Proven ability to develop and implement effective procedures and policies, including internal and external communication and marketing strategies
• Knowledge and awareness of student development, retention, persistence and engagement theories, trends and best practices
• Ability to work under pressure, meet tight deadlines and effectively handle changing priorities
• Excellent judgment and decision-making skills.

• Superior interpersonal skills, including proven ability to collaborate with a wide variety of individuals and departments.
Salary: $67,886.00 - $76,406.00
