Job Description / Duties
Working under the direction of the Director, Student Housing & Residence Life, the Assistant Director, Residence Life provides primary leadership and is responsible for managing the operations and staff of the residence life team. Responsibilities of this position include: setting strategic direction for residence life operations and program planning, continuous program development and improvement, implementation, evaluation and assessment, while making considerations for accessibility, equity and inclusion throughout all aspects of programming; seeking and cultivating partnerships and initiatives focused on transition and success, and ensuring these programs are in keeping with university values and commitments, contemporary practices as well as relevant theory and research; overseeing the administration of the Community Standards; initiating and overseeing assessment projects and initiatives related to student success in residence; and developing long range program planning and implementation strategies. The incumbent works with the Director and committees in developing residence learning objectives, supports and services, establishing departmental goals and objectives and the department’s long range plan.
You will contribute to the mission by:
Overseeing and managing the day to day operations of the Residence Life unit within Student Housing & Residence Life.
Ensuring that the unit is grounded in: supporting the transition to university life; community building; principles and practices of equity, diversity and inclusion.
Evaluating the effectiveness of the Program, identify opportunities for improvement and ensure that mechanisms are in place to monitor and evaluate results and provide feedback for continuous improvements.
Establishing the review and planning cycle for the Residence Life unit including annual and five year plans.
Developing, implementing, evaluating and assessing the Residence Life Program which includes activities, services, supports, the Residence Curriculum and Living Learning Communities in collaboration with other departments.
Providing leadership essential to the delivery of effective operations and appropriate responses to issues.
Recommending options for types of housing and learning communities within residence and any related admissions requirements or supports required to meet specific goals for each community’s development and growth.
Assessing crisis and emergency situations to determine appropriate response and/or referral. Inform the Director, Student Housing & Residence Life as appropriate
Overseeing the management of student behavioural issues and violations of the Community Standards, ensuring that appropriate steps are followed in fair procedural process.
Managing community standards appeals according to procedure.
Qualifications / Required Skills
University degree and/or acceptable equivalent combinaton of education and experience. Masters Degree in Education, Student Affairs, Social Work, Community Services, Leadership, Magement (or related) preferred.
A minimum of five years professional experience living and working in a university residence setting.
Experience in advising students, provision of support plans and safety plans, issues management, emergency response, conflict mediation, program development and student conduct and judicial affairs in an undergraduate residence community.
Experience improving and enhancing the student experience in residence and in postsecondary settings.
Experience creating proposals for training, supports, services and activities.
Experience effectively managing a complex set of competing priorities; issues management, emergencies and responding to the personal crises of individual residents is required.
Experience managing staff, preferably in a unionized environment.
Proven ability to deal with sensitive matters that require professional judgement and confidentiality.
Excellent interpersonal skills, communication (verbal and written) skills, tact and diplomacy required. Working knowledge of Microsoft Office (in particular Word and Excel, Powerpoint).
Mental health and suicide intervention skills training required.
Knowledge of residence management systems such as eRez/StarRez Residence Management System. Familiarity with specific facility systems (e.g., VingCard - Persona, etc.).
Experience interpreting the Ontario Residential Tenancies Act (RTA) is required.
