Job Description / Duties
The Centre for Student Engagement provides programs, services and resources inside and outside the classroom, on campus and in the local community to support student development and learning across all four phases of the student lifecycle.
Working under the direction of the Director, Student Engagement, the Assistant Director (AD), Access and Transition provides primary leadership and is responsible for managing the operations and staff responsible for access and transition programming, services and resources with an emphasis on active pedagogy, inclusive/anti-oppressive practices, experiential learning and reflection.
The Assistant Director, Access and Transition will develop strong working relationships with academic and co-curricular partners in the University as well as local school boards and community partners to ensure the delivery and evaluation of a wide variety of programming to students and recent graduates, many of which are tailored to specific academic disciplines. This will also include overseeing the Centre’s curricular approach and support for research and assessment of programs and learning outcomes; and developing long range program planning and implementation strategies. The incumbent works with the Director and committees in developing engagement learning objectives, supports and services, financial processes, establishing departmental goals and objectives and the department’s long-range plan.
Qualifications / Required Skills
Education:
- University degree and/or acceptable equivalent combination of education and experience. Master’s degree in Education, Student Affairs, Social Work, Community Services, Leadership, Management (or related) preferred.
Experience:
- A minimum of 5 years of progressively responsible experience developing, managing, and evaluating student access and/or transition programs, services and resources, ideally in a post-secondary educational environment across diverse populations. Must have experience, and proven success, with independent program development and partner relationship management.
- Experience managing staff, preferably in a unionized environment and working with human resources policies and procedures.
- Experience with grant proposals, reporting and budgets, drafting and coordinating MOU’s/MOA’s/Partner Agreements and experience with procurement processes including RFP’s ad RFQ’s.
- Demonstrated experience in conflict resolution and/or mediation in highly charged situations.
- Strong communication, networking, and relationship management skills. Ability to collaborate with campus and community partners, and external partners. Demonstrated investment in creating equity, equitable access, and inclusive engagement, including the ability to collaborate with Black, Indigenous, and People of Colour (BIPOC) and disability-accessible student and campus partners.
- Demonstrated experience, as well as training, in providing advice and support to students in crisis situations.
- Possess excellent interpersonal skills in the areas of collaboration, team participation, creative problem-solving, conflict resolution, group planning, and shared decision-making processes. Demonstrated ability
to work effectively in a team environment with commitment to the promotion of an inclusive and innovative work environment.
- Experience conducting research and assessment, communicating, and presenting to various levels of audiences: Academic/ Administrative Departments, Senior Administration, and Student Union.
- Advanced technology skills in data management & analysis, assessment & evaluation and reporting.
Skills:
- Strong ability to think analytically and strategically in a highly collaborative working environment; fostering productive working relationships is essential.
- Proven leadership and problem-solving skills. Comfort working as a member of a team composed of individuals with varying responsibilities. Ability to identity risk and sound judgment to appropriately respond.
Proven ability to deal with sensitive matters that require professional judgement and confidentiality.
- Strong client relationship building skills, workshop development and group facilitation skills. Expertise in educational program design and project planning, management, and assessment and evaluation, with a focus on effective resource allocation and sustainability. Ability to design assessment and learning outcomes for all programs offered.
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills (supervisory, team work and leadership, written, group facilitation/presentation); Computer skills: Microsoft Office, internet search skills and strategies in career development and work search. Skills in budget development and reporting are an asset.
- Must have a strong and creative appreciation of academic values and a commitment to student development and success, including principles of equity and anti-oppression.
Others:
- Ability to work in and comfort within a fast-paced student services environment juggling many activities simultaneously.
- Ability to form strong advising, mentoring, and working relationships with students and professional staff of diverse backgrounds.
- Ability to work with a variety of partners, including those at UTM, on a tri-campus basis and in the local Peel Region community.
- Ability to analyze outcomes and recommend appropriate changes. Ability to plan strategically, both in a team and as unit supervisor.
- Maintains a strong commitment to continuous professional learning and development.
