Overview
Established by OACUHO in June 2026, the Plus Size Inclusion Affinity Group brings together housing and residence life professionals who identify as plus-size, fat, or larger-bodied (size XL and above), committed to advancing body diversity and size inclusion in higher education.
The group creates space to share experiences, build community, and engage in meaningful dialogue about body size, weight bias, and belonging in our profession. It recognizes body size as an often-overlooked dimension of equity, diversity, and inclusion.
As the first affinity group of its kind within Ontario and Canadian higher education professional associations.
Outcomes
- Connect plus-size, fat, and larger-bodied professionals across OACUHO and higher education
- Share experiences, challenges, successes, and support
- Engage in dialogue on weight bias, body diversity, and belonging
- Share strategies for size-inclusive workplaces and student environments
- Support professional growth, mentorship, and scholarship on body inclusion
- Increase visibility of body diversity within OACUHO
Learning Goals
This affinity group aims to create spaces where professionals feel welcomed and represented within OACUHO and the broader higher education community.
Members will deepen their understanding of how weight bias, fatphobia, and size discrimination impact both staff and students, while exploring strategies to create more inclusive workplaces and campus environments. Through research and practice, members will strengthen their ability to challenge assumptions, advocate for change, and support more inclusive institutional cultures.
Ultimately, the group seeks to affirm that body diversity matters, representation matters, and all bodies deserve to take up space.
