Welcome and Keynote

The University of Waterloo will open the day and welcome keynote Dr. Markus Moos (Associate Professor, School of Planning, University of Waterloo).

Housing to Connect: How housing shapes social connectedness and for whom

One of the most important functions of housing is to provide shelter. But housing is so much more than that. Housing can provide a home, it's where people form memories, build relationships, study and as many of us have recently experienced, it can also be a place of work. Housing is an important overall indicator of well-being and shapes the ways in which we connect with our families, friends, neighbors, co-workers, and the broader community. In this keynote presentation, Dr. Markus Moos illustrates the ways in which housing shapes social connections, and how the degree of connectedness varies for different types of populations. His research provides valuable insight into the built form and equity considerations for future housing provision.

Building a Foundation for Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion

This session is the first in a 4-part EDI Series offered by Savannah Sloat. By attending in this session, participants will be able to: summarize key foundational concepts of equity, diversity, and inclusion; identify how one is affected by and participates in maintaining systems of oppression, privilege, and power by critically reflecting on one’s own social location, prejudices, and biases; identify how to critically engage with equity, diversity, and inclusion values as part of a personal practice; and discuss how to further individual learning to better understand structural oppression and its impacts.

Attendance to each part of EDI series results in a Certificate of Completion from OACUHO.
