Fall Business Meeting Wrap -- admin | December 1, 2011
For those who attended the 2011 Fall Business Meeting, they know what an engaging day it was. In case you missed the day, here is a recap of the highlights.
- 102 delegates in attendance from across Ontario
- Featured sessions: Social Media (Matt Waghorn and Alena Boczek), Assessment and Learning (Sarah Burley), CHO Meeting (chair: Chris Read), RTA 101 (Ryan King), LLC Panel (Angela Spineto, Melissa McNown, and Greg Hum), OACUHO Research Writer (Kate Kinsella)
- The sessions generated lots of discussion
- Keynote: Mark Lipton (Guelph-Humber Professor), who talked about engaging students and social media
- Raffle at lunch, raffled off Blake Fly’s book and a half-off the cost of a keynote for August training, also raffled of truffles made by Humber students
- Post-meeting social at Jack Astor’s in the party room
- Live Twitter feed during the business meeting, and a hash tag to keep updates and thoughts on the FBM together in one place
- Updates from the Board of Directors about the current and upcoming projects they’re working on at the business meeting
If you are interested in hosting the Fall Business Meeting, or any OACUHO event for that matter, Humber has compiled a list of lessons learned from the hosting experience.
- Communicate! Clarify early on which responsibilities lie with the host committee and which ones with the Board of Directors. This will help to prevent the same work being done twice, and will also initiate open lines of communication with the board;
- Overbook! If you need five rooms, book seven. We ended up moving parts of the day around to accommodate the number of delegates and this would not have been possible had we not booked the extra space early on;
- Connect! Get in touch with a school that has recently hosted an OACUHO event to get an idea of what’s involved in the process. We reached out to Guelph, who had hosted the Judicial Drive-in Workshop in July, and they kindly shared their prep work with us. This helped us to organize our day and gain a better understanding of the finer details. We are happy to “pay this forward” and invite future hosts to contact us. Contact Brianna Sadler for more information: brianna.sadler@humber.ca
- Enjoy the experience. It is a lot of work, but it is such a rewarding experience for your team!
Thanks to Brianna Sadler for sharing this information with us, and to the entire Humber team who made this event a successful one. It is very much appreciated, and without the hard work of our members, these events would not be a reality.

I had a great time at the FBM! Huge shout out to Humber for hosting! It was nice to see everyone again, and I also loved being a part of the LLC panel
